TIPS FOR A SEAMLESS MOVING DAY!

We know the feeling—moving day is finally coming and you are probably filled with a mixture of excitement and dread. Luckily, when you know what you are doing, moving day doesn’t have to be half as stressful as you might fear. Here are some tips for a seamless moving day.

-Plan and Prepare A lot of the hard work should already be taken care of by the time that moving day comes around. This is the biggest secret to a seamless moving day: proper planning. Here are some of the things that you should take care of before moving day.

-Hire the movers -Finish packing up all of your belongings. -Plan for friends to help you out. -Check out the place that you are moving into, clean it if necessary. -Sort out things like keys for the new place. -Plan meals for you and the movers. -Notify relevant people of your new address (including doctors and dentists). -Make Sure that You are Present

Yes you’ve hired movers for a reason, and you certainly will have a lot less to do when they take care of everything, but that does not mean that you can take the day off altogether. Things will go a lot smoother if you are around to direct and supervise moving where needed. For example. The movers will provide you with an inventory that you will need to check, you might be needed to provide a floor plan for the new location, you will have to hand out tasks to your friends, and so on.

-Assign Tasks Try to have all of the tasks planned out ahead of time, so that when everyone arrives to help you move, you can give them specific jobs.

-Sort Out Food With so much happening on moving day, it is surprisingly easy to find that you are sacrificing your health by skipping meals. Eating can also be tricky on moving day because you won’t be able to cook anything and you probably won’t have dishes and utensils to eat with. Ordering pizza is one option, but if you are feeding your movers, just be aware that they probably get pizza on a daily basis, and maybe go with sandwiches instead! Another really important thing to remember is to keep hydrated. It might be worth buying a case of bottled water to hand out on moving day.

-Make Sure There Is Space to Park This can be tricky if you don’t live in one of the more residential areas of Houston, but try to do what you can to clear a space for the moving truck on moving day, and for your friends to park if necessary. The farther away the truck is, the more difficult it will be to move everything (and the longer it will take)!

-Prepare Your Important Documents Keep your important documents, and perhaps an overnight bag, separate from everything else and with you at all times. Remember you will need money (as will as cash to tip the movers), any important medication, and your keys (both new and old), as well as any important documents such as your contracts and so on.

-Map Out Your Moving Route Google Maps is great, but it doesn’t allow for the technicalities of moving day when deciding what the fastest route from A to B is. You might want to travel your route a few times prior to moving day and make sure there aren’t any problems—such as construction or frequently heavy traffic—that you will face on the big day.

-Wear Comfortable Clothes You don’t want to make moving any harder by wearing uncomfortable or impractical clothes!

-Work Out a Pet/Babysitter Your pets and kids are wonderful members of the family. Unless your kids are at least teenagers, try to figure out a sitter for kids and/or pets on moving day.
